As a volunteer chaplain at Harvest, I get many opportunities to come alongside people in their journeys, hear their life stories, and pray with them if they give me permission. I also have the privilege of building trusting friendships as I point people toward Jesus Christ, the friend of sinners. I’m a sinner who has found grace in the love of Jesus Christ!

It is exciting to see people change from despondency to joy because of their new perspective.

I do not have answers for every problem; however, I do have a listening ear. It is so important to be present when someone is hurting and if I can’t help, I will refer to someone who can.

“Critical moments in people’s lives are times of confusion and distress. Things seem uncontrollable and unmanageable. People have a desperate need to take control of the situation. When chaplains provide necessary information, clarity from confusion, and teach practical skills, they help people begin to control at least one small part of their out-of-control lives.”

Naomi K. Paget & Janet R. McCormack The Work of the Chaplain p. 34.

One song that I have recently re-discovered, from the time when I was in my twenties, is this song by Chuck Girard: Lay Your Burdens Down. I hope that it ministers to your heart and soul as well.

My favourite scripture passage is Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV):

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

because the Lord has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted,

to proclaim freedom for the captives

and release from darkness for the prisoners,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor

and the day of vengeance of our God,

to comfort all who mourn,

and provide for those who grieve in Zion—

to bestow on them a crown of beauty

instead of ashes,

the oil of joy

instead of mourning,

and a garment of praise

instead of a spirit of despair.

They will be called oaks of righteousness,

a planting of the Lord

for the display of his splendor.
